TX-P46Z1
The Z1 series of screens in this year's Panasonic line up all use NeoPDP full HD panels that achieve a performance level above that of the previous generation but at a power saving of around 50%.Advancements in technology by the engineers from the electronics side to the phosphors themselves mean these are the 'greenest' panels yet.
The overall panel depth has shrunk along with the power usage, these Z1 units are a mere 1" deep. This space saving has been achieved by removing all the connectivity and tuning to a separate box which has a WIRELESS link to the display, naturally this is a very stable 1080p wireless link. Video processing is the Panasonic V-Real Pro 4 Engine, which alongside the Intelligent Frame Creation Pro processor working at 600Hz produces immaculate images with a moving picture resolution of 1080p - form all inputs. The contrast achieved through this processing and the NeoPDP panel itself has led to the engineers giving a new quote for the contrast level: 'Infinite Black Contrast'. Quoting numbers has become superfluous it seems.
Very noticeable the displays proudly sport the badge: THX DISPLAY. The engineers at THX have spent many long hours devising a certification for displays that meets their strict criteria. They called on VESA, ANSI and SMTPE standards of display-uniformity, luminance, colour levels and resolution then looked at the capabilities of the internal scalers, deinterlacers and overscanning abilities, over 400 points in all. This extends to more than just their ability with HD content as the display must show extreme competence with SD material as well. More details on the THX Display criteria is available at the THX website, click for details.
Alongside the 4 HDMI inputs the V series has a SD card reader that allows you to view JPEG's directly from the SD card in your camera. Also if you have video content from a camcorder (AVCHD) on the card or DivX movies, those will play too. The rear panel of the screen also has a RJ45 socket for Ethernet connection into your home network. The screen can then act as a DLNA client for streaming picture and video content from your home computer. Connect the network to the Internet and this Viera cast function will give access to specific content offered by some websites. Navigation is updated automatically as the content available changes and other websites start to offer content.
Initially material is available from You-Tube™, VOD from Eurosport, Bloomberg and Google's Picassa™ Web album.
Speakers detachable so you can choose to have just the screen as a monitor with audio routed through a dedicated audio system.
* audio in can be assigned to component video, PC or HDMI.
